The five-minute version of your city
Think of South Bay Intel as the neighbor who knows what is happening in your city.
The one who follows the City Council and school board, reads the budgets and staff reports, and remembers what officials said six months ago.
But also the kind of neighbor who knows you are busy—and is not going to bore you with every detail.
Each week, we give you the few decisions, projects, costs, and changes most likely to affect your wallet, your neighborhood, your family, or the way you live in the city.
Why the South Bay
Part of what makes the South Bay special is its scale.
Our cities are small enough to feel like communities. Their governments are small enough for residents to understand, follow, and take part in.
We want to make that easier.
We track what is proposed, what gets approved, what it costs, who is affected, and what happens next.
How we use AI
Local governments produce an enormous amount of public information: agendas, staff reports, budgets, contracts, presentations, minutes, and hours of meeting video.
Until recently, following all of it closely required more time than most residents—and most small newsrooms—could reasonably spend.
Artificial intelligence changes that.
South Bay Intel uses AI to help scan, organize, compare, and synthesize public records and meeting video across time. That makes it possible to follow more of what local government is doing, connect decisions across meetings, and remember what happened months earlier.
But the goal is not to give readers more information.
It is to give them less—better selected, clearly explained, and grounded in the public record.
Our editorial standard
Technology helps collect, organize, compare, and draft.
Human editorial judgment determines what belongs in the newsletter.
We focus on:
- what changed
- what it cost
- who is affected
- why residents should care
- what happens next
Important claims are checked against primary public records. We do not publish something simply because a machine found it, and we do not treat every agenda item as equally important.
